New Braunfels Has 10 Live Music Venues Worth Knowing — Here's Drake Carter's Personal Rundown

Most people know Austin as Texas's live music capital. But anyone who's spent real time in New Braunfels knows this city punches well above its weight when it comes to live music. From the oldest dance hall in Texas to intimate singer-songwriter rooms to outdoor amphitheaters hosting national acts, New Braunfels has it all. Drake Carter has lived and worked here for over a decade, and these are his 10 favorite spots — the ones worth knowing whether you're a local or just passing through.

Want to know what else makes New Braunfels a great place to live? This community guide covers the neighborhoods and lifestyle in detail.

1. Brauntex Theatre

Drake kicks off at 0:15 with the Brauntex. This is a proper seated performing arts venue — a step up from the bar-and-stage format that most live music spots follow. Drake's personal highlight is the annual Christmas show: old-timey holiday music in a classic Texas venue, an experience that tends to convert first-timers into regulars. If you're looking for a show rather than a scene, the Brauntex is the place to start.

2. Krause's Cafe

Krause's at 0:34. This one is a personal family favorite for Drake — primarily because you can actually bring the whole family and not stress about it. There's room for kids to run around, and the music runs a surprisingly wide genre range: country, jazzy brunch sets on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and German music for anyone who needs a Wuerstfest fix outside of festival season. It's genuinely one of the more versatile spots on this list.

3. Watering Hole Saloon

The Watering Hole at 0:54. Drake calls this one a hidden gem, and the label fits. It's primarily a country dancing venue — the kind of place you go on a Saturday night when you want to actually move. The 80s and 90s country cover bands are the main draw, and the setup is exactly what it sounds like: cold beer, good music, and a dance floor that gets used.

4. Freheit

Fry Heights at 1:05. Drake's description is the best one: "like your neighbor is throwing a party and invited a live band." The vibe is casual and unpretentious — great food, solid live music, and a kids' playground that means parents can actually relax rather than chase children around. If you want a chill evening with good tunes and don't want to deal with a packed bar, this is the spot.

5. Billy's Ice - Now Check out Bobby's Ice

Billy's Ice at 1:29. Unfortunately Billy's Ice closed this past year (2026). It had a great mix of all the local artists from all different genres. They have reopened in a different location off of Hunter Road under a new name, Bobby's Ice!

6. Whitewater Amphitheater

Whitewater at 1:46. This is the big-show venue on the list. Whitewater brings in legitimate national touring acts — Miranda Lambert, Randy Rogers, and names at that level — with smaller openers rounding out the bill. You can rent a private booth or box for a more elevated experience, or join the crowd below. Drake's recommendation: this one is built for occasions — birthdays, anniversaries, or any night when you want to make it an event.

7. Green Grove

Green Grove at 2:22. Another family-friendly favorite — Drake brings his kids here partly because Reya's Ice Cream is right next door, which solves the evening-with-children logistics immediately. The music skews toward local artists in an intimate outdoor setting, with lights strung overhead that make the fall and spring shows especially nice. It's the kind of place that feels like a New Braunfels secret even though it shouldn't be.

8. Gruene Hall

Gruene Hall at 2:52. This is the one that needs no qualifying — it's the oldest dance hall in Texas, and George Strait launched his music career on this stage. That alone makes it worth visiting. Weekend gospel brunch is one of the more pleasant ways to spend a Sunday in the Hill Country, and the Friday and Saturday night bands consistently draw quality acts. The Band of Heathens is one of Drake's personal favorites to see here. If you're in New Braunfels and you haven't been to Gruene Hall, that needs to change.

9. Pour House

Pour House at 3:23. This is New Braunfels's social anchor — the place you end up when you don't have a plan for the night. Tuesday open mic nights are a local institution, and the weekends get packed with a mix of locals and tourists. There's always someone local playing, the energy is consistently high, and it's one of those venues that never seems to have an off night.

10. Redbird Listening Room

Drake saves Redbird for last at 3:48 — and calls it a local favorite. This is the intimate end of the spectrum: a proper listening room set up for singer-songwriters, designed so the audience actually connects with the performer rather than treating the music as background noise. Drake specifically recommends it for date nights. If you want to actually hear the music and get a real sense of who you're watching, Redbird is the room for that.

Ten venues, all worth your time, spread across a city most people underestimate for live music. New Braunfels keeps that secret well — but now you know. Reach out to Drake and Michelle here if you're thinking about making this your hometown.
